How the PUQ Press M3 Works as a Tamper for Mahlkonig E65S Grinders

The PUQpress M3 is a tamper designed specifically for the E65S and E65S GbW, and it works as a base with the espresso grinder resting on top. Once the coffee grounds are leveled in the basket, the portafilter slides in between the upper and lower clamps. A sensor detects it, and the tamp begins with no button to press.

With the M3 installed below the E65S, the transition from grinding to tamping happens in one spot. That helps streamline your workflow, and the gain in workflow efficiency comes without taking valuable counter space from the rest of the station.

Tamping Profiles and Pressure Settings

The M3 delivers the same force on each tamp until someone changes the setting on the display, so every barista on the team gets consistent tamping pressure and the same tamp goes into every cup of coffee made on that setting. The tamper offers adjustable tamping profiles too, with tamping styles that run from a triple tamp to a gentler setting that retracts slowly and uses less force. PUQ rates the M3 for 10 kg or more of coffee each week.

Setting Up the Automatic Coffee Tamper Beneath Your Grinder

The M3 is designed to work on a level, vibration-free counter. PUQ's manual has two people lift the E65S onto it, with the grinder's power cable routed down through the M3. Before the first tamp, the lower clamp is matched to the group handle: loosen its bolts with the included T-wrench, turn the adjustment wheel until the clamp meets the handle, then snug the bolts so it doesn't wiggle.

Integrated and Stand-Alone PUQ Press Models

An automated tamper also cuts the repetitive strain that hand tamping puts on a barista's wrists and shoulders. PUQ makes stand-alone models too, which sit next to a grinder instead of under it, and Crawford's PUQpress lineup includes both types of PUQpress automatic tamper, plus PUQ products such as brackets and replacement parts.
